Question Are there any laws already on the books that protect privacy?

Question Yes. Although many have called for additional laws, there are already a number of federal and state laws that protect the privacy of your personal information. Generally, these laws target information that is particularly sensitive. Financial and medical information, as well as information relating to children are subject to privacy laws of varying degrees of complexity. But the information does not have to fall into one of these sensitive categories to merit protection. Under its authority to prosecute unfair or deceptive trade practices, the Federal Trade Commission has successfully brought suit against Web site operators whose privacy policies are misleading.
