Question When I switch companies, can I bring with me my working file?

Question Generally, no. Under the federal copyright act, works prepared within the scope of employment (even if confidential information is redacted) belong to the employer. Often, working files contain confidential or trade secret information that should not be divulged to other companies. To provide maximum protection, employers should draft policies addressing these issues and inform employees that such documents may not be taken if their employment ends.
