Question I hear that under the newly-passed patent law, the Patent and Trademark Office is going to publish all US patent applications. But I don't want my competitors to see all the proprietary information I put in my patent applications until the patents issue. What can I do?

Question First, if you have no intention of filing your patent application outside the US, you can ask the USPTO not to publish your application. Second, if the proprietary information is not critical to understanding or implementing your invention, you can ask to have a redacted, or abbreviated version of your patent application published.
